The purpose of counting cards is to increase the odds in the favor of the player, while this increase is very small it is none the less an edge that can benefit the player based on his skill. Blackjack card counting works by keeping track of the cards that have been played, and the cards which are still in the deck. A deck that has a large amount of high cards to low cards is good for the player, while a deck that has a larger amount of low to high cards benefits the dealer.

A balanced card counting system has all the cards in a deck adding up to 0. The count will change from a running count to a true count with multiple decks With an unbalanced card counting system the number of decks being used are taken into account, and the point count will not add up to 0.

With so many card counting systems to choose from, how do you decide which one is best? Assess your skills and level of playing experience. Where you may play might also influence your decision. If you are new to the game with no experience try starting with one of the basic systems. Then after mastering that strategy move to one of the more advanced level strategies. It will take alot of practice to develop good skills, you might even want to keep a sheet or guide in front of you will you are practicing. You will want to be able to make choices accurately and quickly. Try to learn as much as possible about the system you are using. Then follow it exactly, even if you have some ups and downs follow the system. Part of playing is developing a discipline and taking the emotions out of the equation. When you feel you are proficient try a real game and test your skills. If you are comfortable with your performance then use it, if not practice until it does work.
